Neighborhood House Nursery School is known for its flexible scheduling, based on both a child's needs and the needs of parents. Children can attend morning, afternoon or full-day. Our Tuition Rate Sheet reflects this ability. Flexibility of schedule begins when a child is three or four before the October 1st public school cut-off. |
Typical Day
A typical day at Neighborhood House Nursery School includes the following routine activities. These activities build a sense of continuity and security for young children.
Greeting and Free Play - As children arrive, they are greeted by the staff. They put away their belongings and settle in for Free Play with their friends. Free Play is an important part of a your child's day where they are able to explore areas in the classroom of interest.
Circle Time – During Circle Time, children work on early literacy and math concepts. They begin by saying the Pledge of Allegiance and then greet each other and count the number of students. They also learn about the concept of more versus less. For example, the teacher asks the question, “Do we have more or less boys today?”.
Theme of the Day – The Neighborhood House Nursery School uses monthly themes to cover the different skills that a child needs to know. We use the State Standards for Preschool when developing our curriculum. Please visit the link below to see first hand what children need to know before they leave us and enter kindergarten. Snack - Snacks are provided by the school which includes things such as saltines, graham crackers, etc. The children are given water. In addition, learning where to sit and how to prepare and clean up are all part of snack time. Parents are asked to provide "healthy" snack a couple times a year. They bring in items such as cheese sticks, yogurt, and cut up fruit.
Quiet Book Time-As children finish their snack, they clean up and then go to the book area to select a book. This time period is all about early literacy skills such as how do I hold a book, turn the pages, and follow along as the pictures tell the story.
Show & Tell – During Show & Tell, children have the opportunity to share a toy, something they have made, or something of importance with the rest of the group. If a child does not bring something from home, then he/she can simply “tell” the rest of the children a story about something that happened or something they did.
Craft - Age appropriate crafts are completed regularly and are tied to the theme of the day, the season, or an upcoming holiday or school event.
Shared Reading - Our teachers select books to share with the children that encourage discussion and thinking, and that can create good conversations with parents at home!
Outside Play - Our students play outside in our fully equipped, large playground and sometimes in nearby Taylor Park. There are opportunities for large muscle work and imaginative play using our row boat and wooden play house., as well as art and music activities.
Enrichment - We offer Story Art once a week and music activities as well.
